Oftentimes photography is a combination of luck and skill. If you are doing landscape work, you are at the mercy of the elements and it takes some skill and knowledge to make that work for you. This photograph was taken aboard the “Spirit of the Sound”, the first electric hybrid research vessel built, as it made its way to 5 lighthouses in Long Island Sound. The conditions weren’t good. It was hazy, cloudy and rainy so lighting and exposure were difficult. The boat was moving but fortunately, the water was calm. I really had very little time to compose this shot since the boat was moving, constantly shifting the perspective. I needed a high shutter speed to keep things in focus and I needed that fisherman to have his line in the water as the lighthouse and boat came into the correct positions. I only had one chance at the composition I wanted. I lucked out. The original is in color but it is very faint and muted so B&W was a perfect choice.
The Lighthouse is the Peck Ledge Light off of Norwalk, CT. Taken with a Sony A6000 at 210mm (315mm full-frame equivalent) at 1/3200 sec f/8, ISO 200.
